Dawn Row. Original oil painting.

$0.00

I captured this scene down at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. The sea was beautifully calm that day. The rowing team emerged and did a circuit under the bridge I was standing on and then started to turn around. At this stage I was looking straight into the hazy early morning sun and thought there'd be no chance of getting the shot. I set the camera to aperture priority and hoped for the best. It turned out to be the action shot of the day.

Because the aperture was so tight there was practically no colour in the photo, so I did the painting entirely in greyscale. It was a perfect reference for working the depth of field, but I decided to lift the boats at the back out of the shadow slightly to add interest to the composition.

September 2022, 59.5cm x 42cm (23.5” x 16.5”). Original oil painting.

Oil on 3mm primed Aluminium Composite Material (ACM) panel.
