The Drive Home. Original oil painting.

I got caught in rush hour one afternoon and while the traffic was at a standstill I took a few snaps of the view from my car. A few days later, Google popped up with a panorama stitched together. This view is one that thousands of people see every day, and yet are oblivious to the beauty that they're crawling home under (rush hour starts mid-afternoon here…).

I liked the perspective that sitting in my car created - this is the M5-M1 North junction in Cape Town. The bridge sweeps down across the view with a kind of foreshortening, backed by the Tygerberg Hills and Matroosberg in the distance. And then the sky - having lived overseas for fourteen years, I can say there's possibly nothing quite like the African sky. From my vantage point in the traffic, it seemed to open up above us.
